Andrzej Falniowski, Techniques for the Collection, Fixation and Preservation of Animals
A compendium of information concerning the collection, preservation and fixation of zoological material. The book is primarily addressed to students and academic staff at universities, but will also be of particular value to a variety of academic, educational and public institutions such as museums, national parks, zoos, schools, quarantine and plant life protection stations, customs offices, agricultural advice offices etc. The methods are presented systematically according to the various categories of the animal world. Other than works from the 1920s, there has been a complete absence of Polish treatments of this subject and thus this book will find an essential place in the library of every zoologist. The book is based on lectures given by the author for more than 20 years at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.
Aleksandra Sulikowska-Gąska, Disputes over icons in Muscovy in the 15th and 16th Centuries
This work discusses the specific variety of iconic theology that originated in Muscovy, and attempts to analyze the causes of its emergence. The processes behind the new ideas of art in Muscovy are presented in the context of its links with Byzantine and Balkan culture, as well as in relation to Orthodox religion on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The book describes various aspects of iconic devotion in the 15th and 16th centuries. On the basis of Trinitarian concepts – such as the Old Testament Trinity, Fatherhood and the New Testament Trinity, as well as other symbolic representations – the author traces the transformation that took place in the iconic canon during the fourteen and fifteen hundreds.
This is an unusually important book which fills in another “blank area” on the historical map of the art and culture of Muscovy and also in many places corrects the mistaken conclusions of various commentators. The book will be a valuable source of information for all specialists and students interested in this subject, art historians and theologians, as well as ethnographers and sociologists.
Paweł Strzelecki,An Introduction to Partial Differential Equations
This short textbook is based on a one semester introductory course Partial Differential Equations I, given at the Department of Mathematics of Warsaw University. The whole material can be covered in 13 to 15 lectures. Initial chapters contain a classical treatment of three basic second order equations: wave, heat and Laplace. Then, Sobolev spaces are introduced and discussed; examples of applications to PDE are given. Two final chapters are devoted to spectral theory and to Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem. A list of around 70 exercises and problems of various degree of difficulty and an appendix on Fourier series is included. The book is self-contained.
Experiments In Animal Developmental Biology + CD (Marek Maleszewski ed.)
A textbook for students of biology, veterinary studies and related disciplines. It traces the development of various groupings of animals - nematodes, insects, echinoids, fish, amphibians, birds and mammals with particular reference to typical representatives of each group. Practical instructions for carrying out experiments are also given.
The themes discussed all form part of the developmental biology program conducted over many years by the team of authors in the department of biology at the University of Warsaw. The book is accompanied by a CD containing films of how to prepare materials for classes (chicken and mouse embryos). This will be of great help not only to students but also to teachers especially in situations where appropriate experimental materials are lacking.
