The current state of art in timber bridge engineering is presented in this book. These structures, in contrary to steel and concrete bridges, are constructed in Poland not very often. Modern timber bridges are made from glued laminated timber, but combined with concrete, steel and post-tensioned timber decks. The procedures of structural analysis based on Standard EN 1995-1-1 and 2 are presented too. Dynamic response and durability of such structure are also discussed. Newest achievements in preservative treatments and fire resistance of timber are given.

The publication presents all the series and types of standard-gauge steam locomotives (as well as wide-gauge locomotives) manufactured in Polish factories for the Polish State Railways (PKP), for the industry as well as foreign customers, being the output of Polish engineers or manufactured according to foreign documentation. In Poland in the 1920’s, three factories produced steam locomotives: “Pierwsza Fabryka Lokomotyw w Polsce S.A.” (Fablok) in Chrzanów, “Warszawska Spółka Akcyjna Budowy Parowozów (WSABP) in Warszawa and “Zakłady Mechaniczne Hipolita cegielskiego” (HCP) in Poznań. After World War II, this production was continued by two factories (Fablok and HCP). In total, 5600 steam locomotives were constructed in Polish factories, the last one leaving he assembly hall in the year 1963.

The book presents state of art of the knowledge related to the thermal phenomena in bridges. The results of extensive studies based on meteorogical data to join ambient (shade) temperature with bridge temperature are presented. The contour maps of extreme air temperature and bridge temperature (depending on structural material) were developed. The methods of selection of bearings and expansion joints in dependence of values of displacements, geometry of the bridge, construction material and other factors are given also. Procedures for determination of internal forces, strains and stresses produced by thermal loading in many types of bridges are described extensively. Some considerations related to construction stages are presented too.

(Digital Signal Processing. From theory to applications)

 

Intelligible and comprehensive pathway from mathematical foundations of analog signal theory to modern applications of digital signal analysis & processing is presented in the book. Necessary mathematical description is illustrated with many examples of calculations, figures and computer programs written in Matlab language.

Apart from classical problems such as analog & digital filtering and continuous & descrete Fourier transform, the following advanced issues are discussed: adaptive filtering, recursive estimation and modern methods for frequency and time-frequency signal analysis, including wavelet transform and filter banks. Presented are also fundamentals of: speech coding & recognition, MP3 audio compression, image analysis & processing and, finally, digital multitone modulation exploited in fast telephone ADSL modems and local wireless Wi-Fi computer networks.

The book is addressed to scientific university workers, students and doctoral students learning secrets of digital signal processing as well as to practising engineers interested in their self-education.

The whole design, production and construction process is desrcibed and supported by number of examples. A broad review of design methods is presented.
