Polish Scientific Publishers PWN/ Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN S.A.

Polish Scientific Publishers PWN/ Wydawnictwo Naukowe PWN S.A. are the major and most renowned Central European publisher of scientific, educational and professional titles, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, academic textbooks in all scientific and humanist disciplines except law and medicine. Based in Warsaw and founded in 1951, PWN has maintained its intense presence in the non-fiction market and for over half a century retained the status of a major scientific publishing house, comparable to Oxford, Cambridge or John Wiley & Sons, with whom PWN cooperates on a daily basis. Once a company owned by the state, PWN underwent privatization in 1992 and became a joint-stock company in 1997. Today, PWN continues to grow and it now includes such subsidiaries as for instance: PWN.PL, who specialize in publishing multimedia and on-line resources such as translation software, PZWL- a medical publishing house or School Publishers PWN, who specialize in publishing textbooks, including those for teaching foreign languages to all age-groups. In 2006, the publishing house and the entire PWN Group received the Publisher of the Year Award!

The history of physics from antiquity till THE presenT DAY
(Historia fizyki. od czasów najdawniejszych do współczesności)
by Andrzej Kajetan Wróblewski
This extraordinary work on the history of physics is probably the most awaited and desired work on the international arena. THE HISTORY OF PHYSICS FROM ANTIQUITY TILL THE PRESENT DAY is probably the first work to appear in the field ever since Isaac Asimov’s publication in 1984. The work is clearly to fill the apparent gap in the Polish and international book market. Based on a series of lectures that professor A. K. Wróblewski from the Warsaw University has been giving for over 30 years, the book describes the main trends in the development of physical thought, beginning from ancient civilizations and ending with an outline of the achievements of contemporary physics. The progress in this branch of science is presented in the context of the general history of science (with particular emphasis on chemistry and astronomy, as these fields are closely related to physics). The vast amount of illustrations, among them the portraits of scientists, drawings and photos of physical equipment from various epochs, the vivid descriptions of ground-breaking experiments, the opening pages of the most prominent publications further enrich this invaluable work. The author’s unparalleled competence, which gives the readers thorough information and exquisite insight into the evolution of physical thought guarantee that THE HISTORY OF PHYSICS shall undoubtedly be a highly satisfying intellectual experience. The book may be used as additional material at the departments of physic, philosophy, history, philosophy of science or the history of science.
