Ośrodek KARTA (KARTA Center)
Ośrodek KARTA (KARTA Center)
For 25 years KARTA Center has been publishing a historical quarterly “Karta”, devoted to the 20th century history of Poland and East Central Europe (52 issues have been published until August 2007). In “Karta”, through a compilation of source texts – memoirs, accounts, letters, documents – history is being told almost exclusively by witnesses. Every issue consists of a number of theme sections, illustrated with photographs from the described period. KARTA publications include also the following book series: “Słownik biograficzny1956-1989. Opozycja w PRL” (“Biographical dictionary 1956-1989. Opposition in the Polish People’s Republic”), “Żydzi Polscy” (“Polish Jews”), “Świadectwa” (“Testimonies”), “Indeks represjonowanych” (“Index of the Repressed”) and “Polska-Ukraina: trudne pytania” (“Poland-Ukraine: difficult questions”). KARTA has also published several albums: “Rok 1920. Wojna Polski z Rosją bolszewicką” (“The year 1920. The war between Poland and Bolshevik Russia”), “Stan wojenny. Ostatni atak systemu” (“Martial law. Communism’s last stand”), “Solidarność 1980-81. Karnawał z wyrokiem” (“Solidarność 1980-81. A carnival under sentence”), “Mercedes a sprawa polska” (“Mercedes. The Polish Connections”).
“Karta” quarterly magazine has also been issued in German and Russian. Two separate theme sections in yet other languages: “Koniec Jałty” (“The end of Yalta”) in English and Spanish and “Dni Solidarności” (“The days of Solidarity”) – in English, German, Ukrainian and Spanish.
“Dotknięcie anioła” (“The touch of an angel”), Henryk Schönker – a story of a Jewish boy who survived the Holocaust. The story takes us to Auschwitz, Cracow, Wieliczka, Tarnów, Bochnia and Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The World War II fates of the author and his family are an amazing series of miraculous events, but also a determined struggle for survival.
In 2006 Polish weekly “Polityka” awarded the book with its history prize.
Warsaw, 2005, hardcover, 15 x 21 cm, 303 pp.
“Solidarność 1980-81. Karnawał z wyrokiem.” (“Solidarność 1980-81. Carnival under sentence”) – a story of the first “Solidarność” since the moment of its founding, through 16 months of its structure building and tense coexistence with the communist authorities, up to the dramatic finale – the introduction of martial law. The story is illustrated with 450 photographs, leaflets and posters, some of which are published for the very first time. The album was prepared in cooperation with the Historical Museum of Warsaw.
Album available in Polish and English language versions.
Warsaw, 2005, hardcover, 22 x 24 cm, 248 pp.
“Stan wojenny. Ostatni atak systemu” (“Martial law. Communism’s last stand”) – an album story – a compilation of source texts and rich iconography – depicting the “war” period of the Polish People’s Republic, the attitudes in the society and the reactions of the Western countries towards Poland’s “internal occupation”. Publication prepared in cooperation with the History Meeting House.
Album available in Polish and English language versions.
Warsaw, 2006, hardcover, 22 x 24 cm, 286 pp.
“Zamojszczyzna” (“The Zamość region”), Zygmunt Klukowski – author – doctor, regionalist, social activist – in his memoirs and diaries from 1918-1959 gives an insight into the history of the Zamość region, which actually depicts the history of the whole country. This book constitutes a study of Polish independence, as well as its loss in 1939. This book has been published in two volumes. Both parts include archival photographs of the Zamość region and private pictures made by the author (almost 160 photographs).
Soon: “Rosja w łagrze” (“Russia in a prison camp”), Iwan Sołoniewicz – a book on the birth and the first years of communism in Russia; a study devoted to the establishing and functioning of the new structures of a totalitarian country. The author, together with his brothers, after a failed escape attempt had been imprisoned in a camp. He describes the camp system and the methods of dealing with its reality - not only by the prisoners, but also by the guards and camp authorities. In the end the Solonievich brothers manage to flee to Finland. The book is not only of great historical value – the story of the author could successfully serve as a scenario for an action movie.
