Radosław Sojak, Daniel Wicenty
Zagubiona rzeczywistość. O społecznym konstruowaniu niewiedzy (Lost reality. On the social construction of ignorance)

Sociology, 302 pages, 135x205 mm mm
ISBN 83-88164-98-8

The book is an analysis of the presence of so-called secret dimensions of social life in Polish sociology after 1989. The authors try to answer why this dimension of reality is so badly recognized by Polish sociologists. Inspired by the classical works of Georg Simmel they show that in the field of sociology one can provide an orderly narrative concerning secret dimensions of social life. And what’s more, they show that this secret world is an important element of Polish transformation. The book also contains the analysis of press discourse on Polish lustration and a case study on the FOZZ financial scandal

Radosław Tyrała
O jeden takson za dużo. Rasa jako kategoria społecznie problematyczna (One Taxon Too Many. Race as a Socially Problematic Category)

Sociology, 180 pages, 135x205 mm mm
ISBN 83-88164-90-2

The title’s taxon is a biological term meaning any systematic unit, such as a species, genus, family, or order. It may be race as well. With regard to animals this concept has a scientific, organizing character. With reference to humans it is rather one taxon too many, a kind of misuse. It is not only problematic but can even lead to racism, which means a baseless feeling of superiority by one human race over another, and in consequence to mutual extermination.

Wygrani i przegrani polskiej transformacji (The Winners and Losers of the Polish Transformation)
Ed. Maria Jarosz

Political science, 324 pages, 145x226 mm, hard cover
ISBN 83-7459-000-9

Compared with similar processes in other European countries, the Polish transformation is specific not only because Poland (Lublin, Szczecin and Gdańsk) was where the fall of soviet dictatorship began but also because of the impressive tempo with which Poland pulled out of the crisis of the late nineteen-eighties and reoriented its economy from East to West. However, the ubiquitously perceived poverty, unemployment, increasing pathology of institutions and power, physical isolation of the rich in monitored condominiums and houses, stimulate the imagination and mould opinions on the state of the economy and society much more intensely than impersonal statistics. Polish society, tired of years of sacrifice and waiting for prosperity “for everybody”, has clearly adopted a more pessimistic view of reality in order to reduce cognitive dissonance.
The co-authors are well known historians, political scientists, sociologists, economists and lawyers.

Europa w działaniu. O szansach i zagrożeniach dla projektu europejskiego (Europa w działaniu.Europe in Action.O szansach i zagrożeniach dla projektu europejskiegoOn Chances and Hazards for the European Project)
Ed. Piotr Żuk

Sociology, 304 pages, 140x220 mm, hard cover
ISBN 978-83-7459-049-5

In the modern world, if we want to grasp future possibilities of a given society’s development, we have to transfer social analyses from national onto global level. It is necessary in the situation where most processes, mechanisms and events have supranational character. Ulrich Beck demands explicitly to reject methodological nationalism in social sciences and replace it with a new critical theory, which emphasizes that: “classic lines between internal and international politics become blurred and dissolve, that such disciplines of political science as international politics and theory of governing should be liberated from the national perception dogmatics.”
